Having lost Nebraska to the Big 10, Colorado to the Pac 12, and Texas A&M to the SEC, the Big 12 finds itself with only nine schools. And the carnage may not be complete; recent reports have Missouri joining the Aggies in the SEC. While the SEC has said it is not seeking to expand any further, it should be expected that they will eventually add a 14th team to balance the two divisions. So if the Tigers do bolt, what should the Big XII do? Oklahoma has also threatened to leave if the league cannot provide stability, basically ensuring the collapse of one of the best athletic conferences of the past decade.
Several schools have been thrown out as possibilities to replace at least one, two (if Missouri does in fact leave) or possibly all four spots vacated by the departing schools. Popular belief is that the Big 12 is actively pursuing BYU, West Virginia, Louisville, and most recently Boise State. BYU and Boise State seem to be logical choices, but Louisville and West Virginia are not. Not to mention that the loss of those schools along with Syracuse, Pitt, and probably UCONN would kill the Big East (not a loss on the football side but a huge loss on the basketball side). So who should the Big 12 target?
