Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant lived in Montecavolo, Italy during his childhood when his father Joe Bryant played professionally in Italy from 1984 to 1991. Many believe that if Bryant does play in Europe during the NBA lockout that he would do so in Italy, where he understands the culture and speaks the language fluently. Kobe has 83 million dollars left on his contract and the insurance would be worth 1.6 million dollars plus the salary.
Bryant, for his part, planted the seed of possibly playing abroad on September 17 when he talked to The Associated Press during a youth basketball clinic in Singapore and didn’t rule out playing overseas, saying: “I could. I’m playing abroad right now.”
One day later, September 18, Claudio Sabatini, owner of 15-time league champions Virtus Bologna, said he was working with former Virtus player Lauro Bon to bring Bryant to Italy – even for just one month. The first contact to Bryant apparently came from Bon on behalf of Sabatini and to Bryant’s Facebook account on September 10.
